The average number of times a keyword is searched per month in a given market.

Search volume is the average number of times a keyword is searched per month in a given location and language. It is the demand side of keyword selection: volume tells you how many people are actually looking for something, so you can size the opportunity before investing in content or ads.

Volume figures come from providers (Google Ads Keyword Planner, Semrush, Ahrefs) that sample and model search data — they are estimates, not exact counts. They also vary between tools, so a keyword's volume should be read as a range and compared consistently within one tool.

Volume must be read with intent, not alone. A keyword with 100,000 monthly searches may be overwhelmingly informational ("what is crm") while a 1,000-volume term like "crm for agencies pricing" is far closer to a purchase decision. Prioritizing by raw volume without intent is how content teams burn months on traffic that never converts.

Long-tail keywords complicate the picture: individually tiny, they aggregate into the majority of all search demand. A cluster of fifty 20-volume keywords can beat one 1,000-volume head term. Allable's keyword research surfaces volume alongside difficulty and intent so prioritization happens in one view, not across five spreadsheets.

Examples

  • Seasonal spikes: "christmas marketing ideas" peaks in November-December — a single annual average hides the opportunity window.
  • High volume, wrong intent: "crm" (165,000) is mostly product research; "crm pricing" is where buyers compare.
