The page of results a search engine shows after a query. What ranks — and in what format — defines who you compete against.

A SERP — Search Engine Results Page — is the page Google (or Bing, or YouTube) shows after a search query. It lists the results that engine decided best answer that query, in the order it believes serves the searcher.

A modern SERP is rarely just ten blue links. It can combine organic results, paid ads, a featured snippet, an AI Overview, a "People Also Ask" box, a knowledge panel, image and video carousels, and local map results. Each element changes how clicks are distributed — an AI Overview can push the entire organic list below the fold.

For marketers the SERP is competitive intelligence. What ranks, and in what format, tells you which search intent dominates, who the real competitors are, and what content type wins. If a query shows mostly comparison articles, a definition page has no chance; if it shows featured snippets, a structured direct answer does.

SERP analysis also predicts where the market is going: a rising AI Overview presence means classic click-through will keep falling, and visibility must be earned inside the answer. Allable's on-page SEO optimizer checks whether your page is built for what the current SERP actually rewards.

Examples

  • A query with an AI Overview and three paid ads above the fold: organic #1 now sits below the visible area, so snippet and answer formats matter more than position.
  • A local query ("seo agency bratislava") showing a map pack: winning here is about local signals, not just content.
