Finding the search terms your audience uses and deciding which to target — the foundation of SEO, paid, and content strategy.
Keyword research is the process of finding the exact phrases people type — or speak — into search engines, and deciding which ones your business should target. It is the foundation of SEO, paid search, and content strategy: everything downstream is only as good as the keyword choices made here.
The process has five steps: seed (list the topics your audience cares about), expand (find variants, questions, and long-tail forms), measure (volume, difficulty, trends), filter by intent (informational, commercial, transactional, navigational), and prioritize (which keywords can realistically rank — and convert).
Modern keyword research goes beyond literal phrases. Search engines understand semantics, so related keywords are grouped into clusters by intent rather than chased one by one. And with AI answers growing, research now includes entity coverage and the question formats answer engines pull from — not just the classic blue-link vocabulary.
Allable's keyword research module automates the pipeline: seed keywords expand into organized clusters with volume and difficulty attached, so your time goes into strategy — which clusters to build, which to skip — rather than copy-pasting spreadsheets.
Examples
- A B2B SaaS seeds "project management" and expands into clusters: features ("gantt chart"), comparisons ("asana vs monday"), and pricing intent ("project management software cost").
- A local agency discovers long-tail gaps competitors ignore: "seo for dental clinics in bratislava" — low volume, high conversion, no competition.
