An Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) is a definition of the type of company or person that gets the most value from your product — and therefore is most likely to buy, renew, and grow. It is the targeting foundation for every channel: positioning, content, paid, and sales.

A B2B ICP is built on firmographics: industry, company size, revenue, tech stack, and the pains and jobs the product solves. It is written from data — your best existing customers — not from who you wish would buy.

The ICP is different from a buyer persona: the ICP describes the account, personas describe the people inside it (the decision-maker, the user, the champion). You need both — the ICP tells you where to play, personas tell you who to talk to and how.

A sharp ICP concentrates effort: content that speaks to one segment outperforms content for everyone, and paid targeting against a defined ICP lowers waste. Allable's AI marketing strategy formalizes the ICP and maps content and campaigns to it.

Examples:

  • A marketing platform's ICP: agencies and in-house marketing teams, 10–200 employees, US/EU, already paying for 2+ marketing tools.
  • Two customers who churn early share no firmographic fit with the ICP — the profile needs a refine signal, not more sales.
