AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — is the practice of optimizing content to be cited as the direct answer by answer engines: voice assistants (Siri, Alexa), Google AI Overview, Perplexity, and ChatGPT. The goal is not a click-through — it is being the source the engine quotes.

Answer engines compose answers from a handful of sources. AEO is about being selected: answering the question explicitly and early, in a format the engine can extract (clear headings, lists, tables, FAQs), and building the expertise signals engines use to judge sources.

AEO and GEO overlap heavily; some treat them as the same discipline. The useful distinction: AEO targets being quoted as the answer, GEO targets being the preferred source across the whole generative surface — answers, citations, entities, brand mentions.

Tactics include question-form headings, concise standalone answers in the first paragraph, schema markup (FAQ, DefinedTerm), and consistent entity presence across the site. Allable's AI Visibility Tracker measures where you actually appear in answers, so AEO work is verified rather than assumed.

Examples:

  • A FAQ block with question headings gets quoted verbatim by ChatGPT's answer to the same question.
  • A page's first paragraph answers "what is x" in one sentence — it wins the voice-assistant readout and the AI Overview citation.
