The practice of optimizing content so AI search engines — Google AI Overview, Perplexity, ChatGPT — cite it in their answers.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of making your content the source an AI answer engine quotes when it responds to a question. Where classic SEO optimizes for a ranked list of blue links, GEO optimizes for being cited inside the AI-generated answer itself — complete with a source link back to your page.

That distinction matters because AI answers now sit above the traditional results. A growing share of informational searches end in the answer panel: the AI summarizes the sources and the session ends without a click. When your content is the cited source, you win the visibility without the click-through; when it isn't, you are invisible to the entire session. This is why GEO is treated as an equal priority to classic SEO rather than a supplement to it.

GEO overlaps with AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) but is broader. AEO targets being quoted as a direct answer; GEO targets becoming the preferred source across the whole generative surface — citations, entity recognition, and brand mentions in Google AI Overview, Perplexity, ChatGPT, and AI Mode.

The practical levers are concrete: entity-dense definitions early in the page, clear claims with named numbers, structured formats (tables, summaries, FAQ blocks) that engines can quote verbatim, a consistent entity and brand graph across your site, and regular checks of where you actually appear in AI answers.

Because the surface spans Google, Perplexity, and ChatGPT, GEO needs measurement across all of them. Allable's AI Visibility Tracker checks where your brand appears in AI answers across these engines and tracks the trend over time — so you can see whether your GEO work is moving the numbers, not just the content.

Examples

  • A SaaS company restructures its pricing FAQ so ChatGPT's answer to "how much does X cost" quotes their page with a source link — capturing a session that used to end in the competitor's comparison article.
  • An agency rewrites its homepage intro with entity-dense copy and named numbers, then sees the brand surface in Google AI Overviews for "best SEO agency" queries.
  • A B2B blog adds a key-takeaways summary block at the top of every article — the format Perplexity prefers to quote when it composes an answer.
