Keyword cannibalization happens when two or more pages on your own site target the same keyword, splitting ranking signals between them. The result: neither page ranks as well as one strong page would.

It typically creeps in with scale — a blog post and a category page both answer "best project management software", or two articles cover nearly identical questions. Symptoms: pages swapping positions for the same query, Google ranking the wrong page, and traffic that stops growing despite new content.

Fixes are surgical: merge the weaker page into the stronger, redirect duplicates, or differentiate each page around a distinct intent — one for beginners, one for comparisons, one for pricing.

Allable's technical SEO audit groups your URLs by keyword and flags potential cannibalization, so you catch it before it costs rankings.

Examples:

  • A blog post and a category page both target "best crm" — Google alternates between them and neither holds page 1.
  • Two agency articles cover "what is seo" and "seo explained" — one intent, two pages, split signals.
