Bounce rate is the percentage of sessions in which a visitor leaves after viewing a single page. In Google Analytics 4 it was reframed: a bounce is now a session with zero engaged events — no meaningful interaction, no scrolling depth, no conversion.
A high bounce rate is not automatically bad. A FAQ page or a dictionary definition may serve its purpose in one view — that is a successful visit, not a failure. A high bounce on a landing page whose job is conversion is a problem.
To diagnose, segment: bounce by traffic source (paid visitors bounce more on cold landing pages), by device, and by page. The pattern matters more than the aggregate. Fixes are page-specific: headline-query match, load speed, mobile layout, a single clear CTA.
Allable's analytics reports bounce alongside engagement depth, so a "high bounce" page is judged by whether people actually get value, not by a number in isolation.
Examples:
- A glossary page at 80% bounce is healthy — the visitor got the definition in one view.
- A pricing page at 80% bounce is a problem: visitors arrive, don't engage, and leave without converting.
